I hope everyone has had a great, crafty week! I'm really excited about this week's WIPW because I started a new project!
This past week I've been obsessed with two things--my new sewing machine (which is for a later post) and a blanket I started after being inspired by Alea's Granny Stripe blanket from the Attic24 pattern.
Not wanting to buy more yarn (for now), I went through my yarn stash and (with Alea's help) picked out the colors I would use for the blanket. It was great to get a little color in my life since recently I've been working so hard on my brown and cream afghan, as well as the tweed project. Despite my husband saying it looks like a blanket for Easter Bunny land or like ice cream, I love the colors. I also love working on this blanket because I'm able to multitask since it's easy!
I just started this project this afternoon (hence the odd, dark picture since I had to take it at night). I got several rows in and realized it was curling, so this is the second go around. I was commissioned to do a 3 tiered cupcake like this one, but in dark brown, cream and pink! I plan to make it bigger than I normally do, so I'm excited to get further on it. I'm still trying to decide if I want it to have a face or not, especially since the bottom will be so dark. What do you think?
For those that are new to WIPW, to share your WIPW post with us, just fill out the Mr. Linky below. Despite it saying you must comment, don't feel as if you do. That is something Mr. Linky automatically adds. I just ask you to check out a few of the links posted to see what everyone else is working on and comment there if you can. Everyone loves feedback and a little encouragement on their projects! Also, please link back to this post in your post to get the word out! The more the merrier!
The granny stripe blanket is looking lovely, I mean to learn to crochet but still haven't...I really must!
ReplyDeleteI look forward to reading about your sewing machine.
I like the colors in the blanket, too. Tell your husband that when winter gets dreary, you'll be cheery!
ReplyDeleteI love the colors of the granny stripe blanket. I tried making one of these a while back but it looked horrible. I really want to make one though.. I will keep trying. =) When I get more yarn that is. lol..
ReplyDeleteDo you have any suggestions on where to get yarn? I live in Pennsylvania and the closest thing I have for yarn is wal mart and that is a 45 minute drive. And they don't have a very big selection there..
Can't wait to see your finished results. =)
Your granny stripe afghan looks like it will be beautiful!.. And as for the cupcake?? I usually prefer NO faces, but I'm sure yours will be adorable whichever way you choose!.. I just finished a small iPod case for Dear Daughter, but I hope to get started on a sweater sometime today. Maybe I'll even get some baking done, if I can squeeze that into my schedule too! Enjoy your day! ~tina
ReplyDeleteI like the colors in your granny stripe blanket. They are bright and pretty. :-)
ReplyDeleteAlso with the cupcake you could always try and do the face in a cream. Maybe do a french knot for the eyes in place of the black plastic ones? Or small googly eyes that you glue on?
Northern Monkey, thanks! I look forward to blogging about it. I was unsure if I was going to, since it's not crochet related, but since I'm making purse lining FOR crocheted purses, I decided I would. :)
ReplyDeleteLiz, HA, I'll tell him that!
Trisha, once you get the hang of it, it's super easy. You should try again! As far as yarn is concerned, depends on what you're looking for. If you want acrylic, I'd suggest going to Hobby Lobby's website and ordering a few skeins of their 'I Love This Yarn' yarn. It's 100 times softer than Red Heart or even Vanna's Choice and the price is good. I don't have a Hobby Lobby near me (or in my state for that matter), and ordered from them. The shipping wasn't too bad (sign up for their email newsletter to get coupons/deals) and it came pretty fast. They have a great selection of colors as well! Let me know what you decide to do! There are also great places that you can order from online, too. Joanns, Michaels, Beverly's Crafts, etc.
Tina, Thanks about the granny stripe blanket! I love it too. It makes me smile. :) I think I may go with no face. I guess it will be a wait and see type of thing. Sounds like you have a busy day ahead! Enjoy your day as well!
Irish, french knot eyes in cream is a great idea. If I go with a face, I may try and do that. I've never done it before, but I think it could just work!
Hehe, I've been admiring all those colourful crochet blankets too. Perhaps one day WIP Wednesday will consist of a selection of blog posts about multicoloured crochet afghans :)
ReplyDeleteYay for the granny stripe! Sometime we are going to have to find a project and do it at the same time, just so we can be dorky about it! Haha!
ReplyDeleteSaffy, the colorful blankets are addicting, aren't they? LOL
ReplyDeleteAlea, great idea!
The colors on your blanket are very pretty. I love colorful blankets. I especially love the babette blanket pattern (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/babette-blanket) and I've been meaning to make one of these or any colorful blanket for that matter someday. I agree with Alea we should have a CAL/KAL - how about a blanket CAL/KAL?
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see Mr.Cupcake, he's so cute!
Wow, Vinita, I love that babette blanket! How awesome!
ReplyDeleteOkay, I'm stupid...CAL/KAL? What does it stand for?
Just go to flickr.com and search for babette blanket and tell me if you don't want to make one right away! I so want to!
ReplyDeleteCAL = Crochet A-Long And KAL = Knit A-Long just means a group of knitters crochetting/knitting usually the same project together. That way they can exchange notes, and solve problems together and then finally when it's done appreciate each others' works.
Great to see granny-type stripes! I would never have thought of that, and it looks so good. Love your colors, too.
ReplyDeleteVinita, great idea!! I would be totally up for that when I have a little more time.
ReplyDeletePentalia, it totally works, doesn't it? Thanks for the color love. :)
I love the blanket -- you've done a great job of choosing colors that work!
ReplyDeleteWe seem to have more things in common: starting a bunch of projects at the same time (which is not a bad thing!) and dealing with the lack of great sunlight when photographing!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Marushka!
ReplyDeleteSuravi, LOL, totally. I needed a blanket I could cruise through since the other afghan was taking so long.
It *does* look sort of like ice cream. And that is all kinds of AWESOME! It's super cheery and cozy at the same time. Great combo, Tami!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Paula. I have to admit, I think it looks kinda ice cream-ish too! LOLOLOL
ReplyDeleteFinally remembered to come by and leave a comment. Need to visit some sites now! ;)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely nothing wrong with an ice cream blanket! Love the colors and it looks great, I have that pattern tagged for when I get some WIPs done and I can take on a long-term project like that.
ReplyDeleteHi Kathy! Thanks for joining us and commenting!
ReplyDeleteGabriela, thanks! You'd be shocked at how fast this blanket is to make! I've only been working on it for a few days and have worked on other stuff. I started with a chain of 180 stitches and it is a perfect width.
That blanket is pretty. Yummy, ice cream colors.
ReplyDeleteI think you could make a face with a lighter brown, that is if you want it to have a face.
Thanks, Denise!
ReplyDeleteGreat news! I did two layers and the start of the 3rd for my cupcake tonight and loved it as is. I sent a pic off to the person I'm making it for and she loved it! Will be sharing it on Friday for FO Friday!
Congratulations. Looking forward to see it finished on Friday.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Denise! I'm sewing it together this morning so I have time to take pictures before I send it off.
