Work-in-Progress Wednesday 5

I hope everyone who had a holiday weekend had a great one! I know I did. We went up to visit my parents in Los Angeles, where I was born and raised. Like anyone who has lived in LA for any significant time, I have a love/hate relationship with the city. Since I've been away for about 5 years (other than small visits), it's mostly love at the moment. I know that would change quickly if I were to move back, that still doesn't keep me from wanting to!

Unfortunately, because of my small vacation, I didn't get much crocheting done. I was hoping to do some up in LA, but we were busy most of the time we were there. Luckily, some of that time was spent buying yarn, but that's for another post soon.

This week's WIPW projects are:

The afghan I've been working on for quite some time now got a little bigger! I showed you where I was at with it in WIPW1 and WIPW3. Here it is as of yesterday (Tuesday). I'm loving it so far, even more than I thought I would. After I finish the current square, I'll move onto the oatmeal solid color and then back to the brown with oatmeal flecks.

I started making the beret pattern from the current Crochet Today! magazine for a friend's Christmas present, who adores all hats. I got a little ways in and realized that I was doing the stitches way too tight. This is a huge problem of mine, something that I seriously need to stop doing. Today I decided to start all over again, and this is what I have so far of the new one. It's still coming out a little smaller than the gauge suggests with the pattern, but will just add another row or two of increase to solve the problem.

For those that are new to WIPW, to share your WIPW post with us, just fill out the Mr. Linky below. Despite it saying you must comment, don't feel as if you do. That is something Mr. Linky automatically adds. I just ask you to check out a few of the links posted to see what everyone else is working on and comment there if you can. Everyone loves feedback and a little encouragement on their projects! Also, please link back to this post in your post to get the word out! The more the merrier!

  3. If the beret ends up being too small another thing you can try besides those adjustments would be to get the exact yarn from the pattern, that's what I ended up doing along with the adjustments, good luck!

  4. Thanks Liz! I hope it turns out okay. LOL

Trisha, welcome! Glad you took the time to participate this week! Hopefully you come back for next week's fun.

Saffy, thanks. I wanted something neutral, but with variation. It seems to be working out pretty good.

Alea, good idea. Thanks! I hate how you can't really tell how it's going to be until it's finished. I'm using a chunky yarn, but we'll see.

  5. Thank you for doing this! I am a little late to the party but happy to have the opportunity to participate. :) Your beret looks cute so far and I am loving your afghan. I love all the natural browns. :)

  6. Thanks, Katie! Welcome to WIPW! It's funny, I'm loving the natural colors, but seeing everyone's bright colorful afghans is making me want to crochet a bright one! lol

  8. Glad you had a nice long weekend! I love the natural colors you are using with the afghan and the blue of the beret. I'm not much a hat person, but the girl in the photograph on the Ravelry link is rockin it! Thanks for hosting the WIPWs and for keeping us going!!!

  10. Suravi, thanks and you're welcome! I'm not a huge hat person myself, but my friend LOVES hats. She wears them more than doesn't!

Thanks Faith! I love the color, too. I bought the yarn when I first started crocheting because I loved it, but it was too hard to crochet with it for me at that time. I had no clue what to make, and then this projects jumped out at me!

  14. Thanks very much for making an afghan with all that fisherman's wool. I've been pondering making a cable knit throw out of it and couldn't decide on a colorway -- and you're swatching all of them for me. Too kind of you! :) So. Mockingjay thoughts???

  15. LOL, Paula! Don't you love the Fisherman's wool? It's a little expensive, but I try and buy a skein whenever I have a 40-50% off coupon!

Mockingjay (without giving anything away for folks) was heart wrenching. I felt spent after finishing it and a little lost, but I loved it. It made me want to read the series again, all quickly in a row. I read each one right when they came out, so it was awhile in between. I didn't love how Mockingjay ended, but I understand and respect S. Collins reasoning for it. I wanted to know more at the end, instead of a look back. And yes, I held it together until the last 40 pages or so...then I cried like a baby.

    What did you think?

  16. I liked it a lot. I felt like the ending was rushed, but thinking more about it, realized that if you pace your whole book (whole series, really) at freight train speed, it doesn't quite work to have a long, drawn out ending where everything is carefully explained and neatly wrapped up. Wrenching is a good word for it, but I felt like it was really well done. There's a Hunger Games group on Ravelry where they've talked it to pieces. I'll send you a link. I'm sending a friend request, too! :)

  17. Thanks Paula! I agree, the whole series is so fast paced, it had to slow down at some time!
