FO Friday 18

I'm excited about this weekend, but not for the normal reasons. We're straightening out our office/studio space, but more about that in a coming post. Let's just say that I will be working hard this weekend, but will be rewarded for it!

I only have one FO today, but I am happy to report I have started the decreases to my knitted hat. I'm a little nervous about that part!

The FO I have to show you is the purse that I started just this week! Shocking, I know! It's such a great pattern (once you get through a few of the issues with how it is written), and now that I have completed my 3rd (and best) one, I can make it with my eyes closed practically. This one is a late Christmas present for my sister-in-law (my husband's brother's wife). She likes stuff that looks from the 40's-60's, and loves purses, so I hope she likes this one. She also loves tiki stuff, so I wanted to use bamboo handles. I originally thought I would go with the lighter ones, instead of black, but it clashed even more with the yarn, as it was a yellow wood color. I got the fabric for the lining several months ago, finding it in the remnants bin at Joann's. I love it, and am happy I have some left over to line something else with it. You can see in the picture (sorry it's dark), but it also has tan/gold flecks in it.

I'm still debating on using a ribbon for the bow. What do you think? Do you like it plain? I would have to run to Joann's (and avoid the yarn) to get something that matched, as nothing in my ribbon stash does. You may remember how the ribbon goes into the purse, but if not, here is the one I made for my sister for Christmas that has a ribbon.

Materials used:
5.00 mm (H) hook
6.00 mm (J) hook
6.50 mm (K) hook
Red Heart Super Saver (purse- Buff)
Wooden Bamboo handles- Black
Green dragonfly (lining)
Sewing Machine
Brown and green thread
Yarn needle

  1. It's adorable plain, but I think that the bow would add that extra little touch.

  2. The bag turned out great! I really love how the black handles look with the lighter color yarn. Your linings always look so professional. I would love to see pictures of how you achieve that next time you make a bag. Mine always looks sloppy.

  3. OMG Tami I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE the purse. I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love making purses although you wouldn't know it because I've been so cowl/scarf minded. You totally inspired me with this. Sooooo cute.
PS: Good luck with the office/studio. Can't wait to see what it looks like when you're done

  4. Halfpint, thank you! :)

Mujercita, yeah, I think I'll run to Joann's and Michaels to see what they have. I won't force it, but if a ribbon is perfect, I think I'll get it. :) Thank you.

autumngeisha, thanks! Good to hear you like the handles, I was kind of unsure about them. That's a good idea. Maybe next time I'll take a picture of how I do it. I don't think I do anything too special, but who knows. I kind of made it up as I went along the first time and have done it that way since.

Michelle, thanks! I'm really happy with it! Definitely my best one yet. I guess after doing the same pattern three times, you'd think it would have to get better. LOL

  6. From start to finish, yay! I'm still scared of sewing fabric to my knitted or crocheted piece, but yours looks like it turned out well!

  7. It's beautiful, Tami! I've been lining my knitted bags, too. It makes them easier to use and also makes them look more professional. I usually handstitch mine around the top only so that I can remove the lining and wash it separately from the rest of the bag if I ever want to.

  8. I think it looks perfect as is. I'm sure your sister-in-law will love it with or w/o the bow. I'm amazed that you finished it, lining and all, in one week! We are organizing/spring cleaning too, and I hope to improve my knitting work space at the end of it so I'm looking forward to seeing your studio space.

  9. Countess Ablaze, thank you!

Kathleen, your yarn is beautiful! Great job. I'm going to see if I can find the perfect ribbon for it tomorrow.

Word Lily, thanks! It's not scary at all, as long as you hand sew it!

Marushka, thanks! This lining is just sewn to the top as well, and the rest just hangs loosely inside the bag. I haven't tried to sew a lining any other way! :)

Shannon, thank you! I know, I made the crochet part in a few nights which is incredible! Very exciting about your knitting space. Take pics as well. I'm always looking for better ways to organize.

  10. The purse is just awesome! It would look great with or without the ribbon bow! Changes the 'feel' of the purse.

The handles are perfect for the purse!!

  11. Super cute! And in case it still matters, I vote ribbon all the way, especially if she's into the vintage thing. It turned out AWESOME! Don't sweat the hat decreases, they're a breeze. Just don't try to count (or watch tv) and decrease at the same time. :) Ask me how I know...

  12. SweetPotato, thank you! The ribbon definitely changes the feel. The good thing is, if I do go with the ribbon, she can always remove it if she doesn't like it.

Paula, thank you! You know, I don't know if it's turning out right, but it's not as hard as I thought. I'm getting close to the point of having to use two circulars. Not really looking forward to that part. LOL

  13. That looks like a perfect gift for a vintage lover-- the black handles are fab.

  14. The bag looks great without the ribbon, but a constrasting color ribbon would make it pop.

  15. What great texture! I love it. Hmmm. I generally would not put a ribbon because it would turn into a non-everyday bag (at least for me), but if it's a gift, I think a ribbon would be a really fun and pretty touch.
