Work-in-Progress Wednesday 78
Hi all. Happy February! This is going to be short, because since Sunday I've been really really sick. I haven't done anything except sleep and lay around watching good "sick" movies like Runaway Bride, American President and Love Actually. Don't you just love the Romantic Comedies when sick? They're my favorite. :)
Obviously with being so sick, I haven't worked on my sweater. Instead, it's sock mania in my house! Not only do I still have the January HP challenge pair on the needles, but I've started two more! Seriously nuts, right?
So here's the first pair:
My Time Traveler Felici socks, because what's better than being sick with some Doctor Who knitting to make you feel better? I'm doing these very plain vanilla, with one catch. I started with just 10 rows of k3 p1 ribbing and then the stockinette leg. The catch? I'm going to try my first afterthought heel!! Cool, right? You might be able to see the pumpkin color Delicious fingering I've inserted into the sock where the heel will go. For those of you who have done this before, how deep did you make your heel once you were ready to do so? Did you do 3, 5 or more stockinette rounds before starting the decreases? The one thing people don't really talk about with the afterthought heel is if the measurement from where you place the heel. What I mean is, if you were to picture it on a normal heel flap/turn/gusset, would it be basically where the gusset decreases are? Am I making sense to those who are not sick? LOL I think I may be giving this too much thought, but I'm just trying to make sure it won't be A) too tight and B) long enough in the foot so I want to measure from the right place on another one of my socks.
My next socks are the February HP Challenge socks. For those of you who didn't read about the ones I was working on in January are probably wondering what the HP challenge I'm talking about. A few ladies in my knitting group and I decided to knit all of Erica Lueder's Harry Potter sock patterns this year. There are around 11 of them I believe, so we're going to do one per month, and then either do a different pattern for the 12th, or do one of them twice. We'll see when we get there. This month, we've decided to knit Petunia Dursley's Double Eyelet Socks. This is a fun basic lace pattern. I decided to use my one skein of Knitter's Brewing Company Sock-a-holic Sweet yarn in Sweet Lavender. It's a pretty yarn that is 60% merino, 15% nylon, 15% bamboo and 10% silk. The bamboo seems to give it a cool feel and the silk gives it a shine. This is the first time I've used this yarn, so I'll let you know how I like it when I get a little further into the sock/pattern.
That's it for me today. I hope you have a great rest of the week. If you're awaiting a Candy Skein shipment from me, I hope to be well enough to get to the post office later in the week.
For those that are new to WIPW, to share your WIPW post with us, just fill out the Mr. Linky below. Despite it saying you must comment, don't feel as if you do. That is something Mr. Linky automatically adds. I just ask you to check out a few of the links posted to see what everyone else is working on and comment there if you can. Everyone loves feedback and a little encouragement on their projects! Also, please link back to this post in your post to get the word out! The more the merrier!
The socks look great so far -- I love the striping on the first pair!
ReplyDeleteThe HP sock challenge sounds so fun. . . Kinda wish I could participate in something like that! (I guess it'll have to wait with everything going on.)
I hope you feel better really soon!!!
Love the self striping yarn, I want some! Must destash, must destash, must destash!
ReplyDeleteHave you been to the doctor? you have been sick awhile. I'm the last person to want to go to the doctor but after awhile sometimes it is necessary. Hope you feel better soon.
ReplyDeleteI love the time traveler colorway! Unfortunately, I have no sock insight, but I wish you the best of luck!
ReplyDeleteLove the time traveler socks.
ReplyDeleteFeel better Tami!
ReplyDeleteHope you feel better soon. Socks are addicting aren't they? I've never done an afterthought heel. I look forward to seeing what you figure out.
ReplyDeleteOh my, I love the stripes. Hope you feel better soon!
ReplyDeleteOkay to answer your afterthought heel question:
ReplyDelete1. I do a couple rounds of stockinette after picking up for the heel just to tighten things up. Maybe 3 or 4 at most.
2. I do my heel just like a regular toe. So if my regular toe is approximately 2 inches long when I knit it, then my heel will take up 2 inches. So if my foot measures 9.25 inches from heel to toe, then I would make the "foot" of the sock 7.25 inches knowing I will be inserting a 2 inch heel in afterwards.
3. My regular toe is as follows:
round 1: *k1, ssk, knit to 3 stitches before halfway, k2tog, k1* repeat over other half of stitches
Round 2: knit
Repeat those until about 14 total stitches remain, then repeat round 1 until 8 or so are left (however many you want to kitchener)
4. I recommend trying it on as you decrease for the heel so you get the fit you desire.
If you want more clarification, please email me.
Wow, thank you for all of this! It really helps me understand. :)
Deleteglad I could be of some help.
DeleteSorry to hear you're sick - you're the 3rd shop owner on my blogroll to go down this week, so maybe it's an internet virus! ;D
ReplyDeleteI LOVE those time traveller socks. The yarn is brilliant, and they're going to be so much fun to wear :)
I kind of go into a Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings mood when I'm sick and wind up watching all those movies in their entirety.
ReplyDeleteAs for sock knitting...I have some Time Traveler in my stash (like 8 skeins) and I'll probably make several pairs of socks (or maybe I'll throw in one pair of fingerless mittens or something like that).
Oh, and most of Erica Lueder's patterns are in my queue on Ravelry :)
Sorry you're not feeling well, I love your Doctor who socks!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear you're not well. I sympathise, we are recovering from a week of sickness too :(
ReplyDeleteYour stripy sock is particularly AWESOME!
socks are looking good! Sorry you haven't been well, hope you are on the mend!
ReplyDeleteLove the stripey socks, very Dr Who ish!
ReplyDeleteOoh, I love the felici socks! I'm a complete sucker for self striping yarn :)
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the afterthought heel, I haven't attempted that one yet so I'll be interested to see how you get on with it!
I am particularly excited about your 4th Doctor socks! And what size circular needle are you using? What brand? I haven't made socks yet. I have some yarn set aside for some, but still have to get the DPNs --though I do believe things might go faster with circulars... Oh! and what colors/brands of yarn did you use? I've heard sometimes it's hard to find just the right shades for the 4th Doctor scarf pattern.
ReplyDeleteI also love the color for your other socks --just a big Doctor fan, so of course that's all I can think about! ;-)
I'm using Knit Picks Harmony 32" circular cable doing magic loop in 2.5mm. The sock yarn is Knit Picks Felici in Time Traveler colorway. Here's the link to the yarn: http://www.knitpicks.com/yarns/Felici_Fingering_Self_Striping_Sock_Yarn__D5420165.html
DeleteThank you for all of the love everyone! I'm feeling a little better today. <3
ReplyDeleteThe Jane Austen Book Club is one of my favourite sick day movies. Glad to hear you're coming around!
ReplyDeleteI love the time traveller colorway - it looks like so much fun!
ReplyDeleteLove your stripes! Stripes are always good:) Hope you are soon fit again!
ReplyDeleteIt's been one of those days - I set my blog early to post and then never linked on yours.... anyway - it's there now! Love your colorways on both projects!
ReplyDeleteHope you are feeling better. Great socks!
ReplyDeleteOoo! I have that Traveler yarn, you are so making me want to knit with it, so cool!!
