It wasn't easy, but I took out all of my yarn and took pictures of it today. I have to say, I was surprised by the number. It's amazing how much yarn you can cram into places around the house. I seem to have it all over, even though I have two specific places to keep it. I guess that's the way it goes.
And the final start count in number of skeins (even counting partial is)... 244.
I've added a count below the Yarn Diet button in the right sidebar for those who want to keep track with me. Each time I use a skein/ball/hank/cake down to the point where I can no longer make anything else with it, I will take it off the counter.
I hope over the next five months to be able to use at least half of it. For details of the yarn diet, please see this post. Despite being able to buy yarn five times during the 5 month diet, I hope to not even do that, but we'll see!

I'd love to see pictures of those participating. Just add a link to the Mr Linky below to share your post about your yarn diet. I will keep the Mr Linky open for the full 5 months so we can keep adding links to our new posts to keep a record over time. Please be sure to link directly to the actual yarn diet post and not your blog url. Thank you!
My first minor victory happened today I looked at the Sunday craft store ads and didn't freak out. Luckily there wasn't a ton of yarn on sale...
ReplyDeleteWas it a sign? When my daughter & I headed to the LYS today with our Christmas gift certificates, the store was closed.
ReplyDeleteIt's always scary to add up the stash, isn't it? Sounds like you have 244 great possibilities for creativity in 2011 -- can't wait to see what you make!
Alea, oh man. That's hilarious. I'm going to try and stay away from the ads, though the Joann's one comes in the mail.
ReplyDeleteMarushka, that IS a sign! How odd for them to be closed on a Sunday! Maybe they partied a little too hard on the 31st.
For some reason, the Mr Linky isn't working properly. Stay tuned!
ReplyDeleteI won't be joining a yarn diet. . . I would just be kidding myself! But I will enjoy following your progress! : )
ReplyDeleteThanks, Shannon! It will be hard, but I have faith in myself!
ReplyDeleteI'll be attempting to join you, but have not counted or photographed yet. I think it will mostly be about avoiding purchases
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see everyone's posts!
ReplyDeleteAwesome, Halfpint!
ReplyDeleteHauling out my stash and counting it was scary! But I'm glad I did it.
ReplyDeleteChelsea, glad you did it! It is a little scary isn't it?
ReplyDeleteSaw this and joined. I am coldsheeping and have been since July 2010 with an end date of June 2011. I can tell you that it is very difficult to half my stash in 6 months. Good luck to you. I'm not on a diet, I'm "changing my lifestyle."
ReplyDeleteSdmags, awesome! Welcome to the blog and our yarn diet for 2011! You don't have to use half your stash in 6 months, but we thought it would be fun to have an end goal to try and hit. Obviously, none of us with large stashes could never use it that quickly. It's a way to get out of the yarn diet early though! LOL
ReplyDeleteI'm in, but I just haven't gotten organized yet to write a post about it yet. I do have a question however, will donated yarn count against us? As in, if someone were to commission me to make something and she purchases the yarn, do I still count it in my stash?
ReplyDeleteJoycers, right on! Donated yarn does not count against you. Either does yarn from a care package/swap/gift.
ReplyDeleteworking on organizing mine right now - the posts will be on my blog this weekend!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to it, jette! Thanks for joining in!
ReplyDeleteOMG, what a great idea. And I would join, I really would, BUT I spent half the year in 2011 not buying yarn, I need to be able to now! LOL Maybe next year!
ReplyDeleteHello! I was already doing a self-imposed yarn diet this year but as there is a group going, I figured the more motivation the better!
ReplyDeleteWelcome, Countess Ablaze! So glad you're joining us!
ReplyDeleteI'm a late entry but have been on a self imposed ban for a few months even missing WonderWool this year to keep my stash under control.
ReplyDeleteWelcome, Clare! It's never to late for a yarn diet!
