Work-in-Progress Wednesday 15

First off, I have to say a HUUUGGGEEE thank you to Stacey, one of our lovely weekly WIPW members, who made us a WIP Wednesday blog button to advertise on our blogs! I love it so much, and I hope you all do, too. Please feel free to use it in your WIPW posts and on your blog in the side bar. If you like, you can link it to my WIPW tag here, that will pull up all of our WIPW posts from the past, including the newest one that will appear first. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please feel free to let me know in the comments section.

Now onto WIPW 15!

That's right...I'M KNITTING A SCARF!!!!!! It's from this pattern, using the knit stitch and purl slip stitch. I screwed up on one row I realize now, so that the first few rows of the ribbing doesn't line up with the rest, but it's hard to see it so no big deal. It also doesn't look much like the project pictures, and I'm not exactly sure why. All the same, I'm super excited about it. At first I thought it looked like crap, but the more I worked on it, I like the way it's shaping up. I'm using Patons Shetland Chunky which I really like, though I wish it would slide on my needles better.

Thanks to all of you who suggested knitting videos and a special thanks to Paula and Alea on helping!

For those that are new to WIPW, to share your WIPW post with us, just fill out the Mr. Linky below. Despite it saying you must comment, don't feel as if you do. That is something Mr. Linky automatically adds. I just ask you to check out a few of the links posted to see what everyone else is working on and comment there if you can. Everyone loves feedback and a little encouragement on their projects! Also, please link back to this post in your post to get the word out! The more the merrier!

  1. Good for you, Tami, for taking up a new skill! I am going to get the button for my blog, and I thank you for that as well.

  2. Tami, I'm a real ditz, but I can't get Blogger to accept the URL for the button. Otherwise, I would have it up by now. (It says that the it's "broken.")

  3. Hi Tami! I like the new button! Got you on my right side bar now! Wish I could post something today, but I've been so busy with a Christmas swap, with things I can't POST because it will spoil the surprise for the recipient!! Hopefully I'll have something to share next week!.. Have a great day! ~tina

  4. I really like the new button, I've put it on my post as the link to here. It makes me feel like I'm part of something all official now LOL.

  5. So exciting, your first knitted scarf! It's looking really good so far, too! I like that you chose something that allows you to practice both the knit & purl stitches, plus slip stitch patterns are more fun than simple garter stitch. Make sure that when you slip the stitch (just transferring the stitch from your left hand needle to your right hand needle) for this pattern, you hold the yarn in front and slip the stitch purl wise, not knit wise. Great choice on the colors, too. The blues and grays are perfect hues for winter.

  6. Your scarf looks great! I am so impressed that you are new to knitting and you are moving on so quickly to something more complicated.

  7. Liz, thank you! I wish I had more time to work on it! I'm not sure why the link isn't working for you. I wonder if anyone else is having issues. Has anyone linked to the WIPW label? You can always just link it to the main page of the blog, so on Wednesdays it would go to the right post.

Thanks, Beansieleigh for using the new button! Good luck on the Christmas swap!

Craftycripple, it does make it feel "real", doesn't it? I've been wanting to make one forever, for WIPW, FO Friday and Flash Your Stash but haven't had the time. All the credit goes to Stacey for making this one!

Autumngeisha, thank you! So when slipping the purl slip stitch, I should be bringing it to the front? Does that make a difference even though the purl ss is basically just a transfer from one to the other, and then the pattern goes back to the knit stitch? Yeah, I love the colors too! So pretty! It's like dark blue/light blue/gray blue/brown/dark brown all in one skein!

Affiknitty, thank you! I thought I would get bored if I started with something only made out of the garter stitch so I decided to challenge myself. It's not perfect (I can't figure out why it doesn't look like any of the pictures. LOL) but I like it.

  8. Good for you with the knitting! Love the button, haven't added it yet, but I will. Thanks

  9. Tami, since you are knitting the stitch before the slip stitch, you have to bring the yarn to the front, then slip the stitch purl wise, then bring the yarn to the back again to knit the next stitch. Hope that makes sense!

  10. Tami, I forgot to add that it does make a difference. If you are slipping your stitches with the yarn held in back, you will not get the same "ribbed" look as in the pattern. Instead of pronounced columns of knit stitches in a purl background, you will just have purl stitches. Also, if you wanted to make a wider scarf (since the original one is knitted in chunky weight yarn) you can cast on more stitches. For this pattern, cast on with multiples of 4 stitches plus 3. For example, 40 + 3 = 43 stitches would give you a scarf twice as wide.

  11. Thanks, autumngeisha! Hmm, so I wonder if I should start doing it the right way, bringing the yarn forward for the ss, or keep going how I'm doing it so it all looks the same. I guess I'm early enough into it that I can do it right! I'm actually using a chunky yarn! This is my first time ever making anything with a chunky or bulky weight.

  12. Ooops wrong link the first time - the second one is right though!!!

Yay on the scarf, you'll be a fab knitter before you know it!

  13. Hey Emma, the second doesn't work either. The first went to an older post and for some reason the second goes no where, so my network pulls up a search engine from my internet provider. I'm going to delete both, if you can reinsert the right one, that would be great!

  14. Emma, nevermind, I was able to fix the second one. What happened was the link posted twice inside the same box, so it couldn't find your site. I can change it within Mr. Linky. Everything should be good now. :)

  15. Eeek I don't know what was going on with that? I'll blame my broken laptop that I'm still using as my brand new one didn't work when it arrived and has had to go back for a replacement!

Thanks for fixing it for me!

  16. Nice work on the scarf - you'll feel like a knitting pro sooner than you expect. I love that colorway, too.

  17. No problem, Emma! I've had plenty of laptop craziness in my life!

Marushka, thank you! I hope so. I just received an order in the mail from Knitpicks with their try it pack of needles, Stroll yarn and books! I'm so excited to use them.

  18. Love your scarf and the yarn color you picked. You're really coming along with your knitting.

Love the button too. I'll be adding it later, I have a toothache today and it was all I could do to get my post written today.

  19. Check you out! You're totally a knitter! Lovely colors for the scarf. :)

  20. Thanks, Denise! I hope the toothache goes away for you! Those are the worst!
