FO Friday 103

Happy Friday!!! I hope you all are excited for the weekend and have great things planned. My husband and I are looking at houses (to buy) on Saturday, which is always fun and on Sunday we're either going to the beach or going apple picking! I know, very different things. I must say, I'm SUPER excited about apple picking. I've never gone before (I know, shocking right?) and it's always been one of those things I've wanted to do. I always joke that I want to be an apple picker in another life. I know it doesn't sound glamorous but something about it makes me want to try it.

As I mentioned, Thursday a few great friends of mine (from my knitting group) and I went to a few yarn stores. We ended up going to three different ones (all new to me) and then had lunch by the beach. You can check out my Instagram for the pics (and to see what I bought) at @candyskein or you can check out the Candy Skein twitter feed to see the same pics! We had great fun!

I tried to take a picture of my socks on with Doctor Who in the background but it's hard to get a picture of your tv (with an orange background!)

I give you my Doctor Who socks!!!!!!!

THREE WEEKS in a row people. Can you believe it? That might just be a record for me for FO Friday!

I made them with an afterthought heel. The cuff and foot (minus the heel) is only off by ONE row in the stripes. Crazy, right?? It wasn't as hard to match them up as I thought. The heels are slightly different for a few reasons. A) it was hard to match the brown up to start the heel where it was on the first sock since it wasn't at the beginning of the brown. B) the first gusset area was a little tight, so I added a few more rows to the heel before the decrease on the second sock and also went down a few more stitches in the decrease before kitchnering the toe. Both are very wearable obviously, but I may just add a few more rows to the tighter one. Next time I do after thought heels I'll know the exact amount of rows I need to get it right for both socks, as this was my friend time.

For all my notes on how I made these socks (I didn't use a pattern), you can visit my project page where I left the notes on Ravelry!

Materials used:

Yarn: Knit Picks Felici in Time Traveler (two balls)
Needles: 2.5 MM
Pattern: No pattern. After thought heel

That's it for me! I hope you all have a great weekend!

FO Friday 81

Hi everyone! I hope you're all doing well and had a great week. I've been busy, but I did have time to finish something. It may not be a completed FO, but it's half of one. Does that count??

Sorry this is so short, but I've been extremely busy this week, and posting every day for Life as an Indie Dyer is just about filling my internet time! I'm barely getting this up in time, as it's 11pm as I type this! I hope you have a great weekend and Happy Easter!!!!

Work-in-Progress Wednesday 87

Hi everyone! I hope you're having a great week. I'm been busy as usual, not only with my normal work, but if you haven't visited the blog this week, I've started a new blog series! This week I'm posting each day for the Life as an Indie Dyer to share with you what a week lately looks like for me. After this week, I'll probably have one post each week in the series, give or take. I hope you enjoy the posts, as I've enjoyed writing them so far. I will be posting Wednesday's post later in the day.

I haven't had a lot of knitting time lately (as you can imagine), but since I hurt my back this weekend, I couldn't work! A blessing in disguise, maybe, but back pain is no fun, let me tell you! Anyway, because I hurt myself, I got to work on my Time Traveler sock that I have named All I Need is a TARDIS on my project page. Awesome, right (if you're a Doctor Who fan)?

As you can see in this not great iPhone picture, I'm doing an afterthought heel. This is my first time doing an afterthought heel but I thought it made sense since I am using self striping yarn. This is Knit Picks Felici in the colorway Time Traveler (hence the Doctor Who name). This is my first time completing something with the yarn, and at first I wasn't sure I liked it, but now I really do enjoy it. It has good stitch definition, is soft but feels pretty sturdy. I'm not following a pattern, but I did use this video to figure out how to do an afterthought heel. I just pulled out the waste yarn (or almost, I missed a stitch when picking them up so the waste yarn in the picture is holding that one stitch until I can catch it on my way around) and will start knitting the sock. It's hard to tell if they were going to fit before I pulled the yarn out, but now I think they'll be perfect!

That's it for me today as far as WIPW. Remember, I'll be back with my Wednesday Life as an Indie Dyer post later!

Work-in-Progress Wednesday 78

Hi all. Happy February! This is going to be short, because since Sunday I've been really really sick. I haven't done anything except sleep and lay around watching good "sick" movies like Runaway Bride, American President and Love Actually. Don't you just love the Romantic Comedies when sick? They're my favorite. :)

Obviously with being so sick, I haven't worked on my sweater. Instead, it's sock mania in my house! Not only do I still have the January HP challenge pair on the needles, but I've started two more! Seriously nuts, right?

So here's the first pair:

My Time Traveler Felici socks, because what's better than being sick with some Doctor Who knitting to make you feel better? I'm doing these very plain vanilla, with one catch. I started with just 10 rows of k3 p1 ribbing and then the stockinette leg. The catch? I'm going to try my first afterthought heel!! Cool, right? You might be able to see the pumpkin color Delicious fingering I've inserted into the sock where the heel will go. For those of you who have done this before, how deep did you make your heel once you were ready to do so? Did you do 3, 5 or more stockinette rounds before starting the decreases? The one thing people don't really talk about with the afterthought heel is if the measurement from where you place the heel. What I mean is, if you were to picture it on a normal heel flap/turn/gusset, would it be basically where the gusset decreases are? Am I making sense to those who are not sick? LOL I think I may be giving this too much thought, but I'm just trying to make sure it won't be A) too tight and B) long enough in the foot so I want to measure from the right place on another one of my socks.

My next socks are the February HP Challenge socks. For those of you who didn't read about the ones I was working on in January are probably wondering what the HP challenge I'm talking about. A few ladies in my knitting group and I decided to knit all of Erica Lueder's Harry Potter sock patterns this year. There are around 11 of them I believe, so we're going to do one per month, and then either do a different pattern for the 12th, or do one of them twice. We'll see when we get there. This month, we've decided to knit Petunia Dursley's Double Eyelet Socks. This is a fun basic lace pattern. I decided to use my one skein of Knitter's Brewing Company Sock-a-holic Sweet yarn in Sweet Lavender. It's a pretty yarn that is 60% merino, 15% nylon, 15% bamboo and 10% silk. The bamboo seems to give it a cool feel and the silk gives it a shine. This is the first time I've used this yarn, so I'll let you know how I like it when I get a little further into the sock/pattern.

That's it for me today. I hope you have a great rest of the week. If you're awaiting a Candy Skein shipment from me, I hope to be well enough to get to the post office later in the week.
