FO Friday 19

I thought I would have a ton of things to share with you today, but unfortunately I don't. I do have a few things almost complete, but I didn't want to rush them since I have one done to share today. Very vague, I know! Sorry! OH, and for those wondering, I ALMOST have that horrible mess of a skein untangled! WOOT!

You've heard a lot about my first knit hat. I had apprehension in doing it in the first place, and then once I did I realized that the needles I was using were best made to be chop sticks (if even that!) than knitting needles. They were very blunt and coarse, leading to some cursing in my house.

Despite a few snags at the top, where the yarn split due to the needle-suckage, I'm crazy happy with this hat. Next time I think I'll make it a little longer, as I like my ears nice and covered and this only comes about half way down. I wasn't sure how much room the crown of the hat would take, so I ended up short. No biggie, still very wearable! Also, you may remember that I screwed up on the ribbing, but I just swing that part in back! I won't win any awards with this hat, but I am very happy with it. You be the judge.

Materials used:

US 8 16" needles
Berroco Vintage (Dungaree)
Yarn needle

  1. I think you can be proud of the hat. Its a shame when the needles aren't right for the yarn. Sometimes its worth that little bit extra for the posh needles. I'm a big fan of hardwood needles, but some people prefer bamboo, others acrylic. You just have to find what works best in your hands.

  2. Great job! It looks very cozy. I totally feel you on the needles, I left one at home by accident yesterday and spent my lunch hour trying to knit with a crochet hook as a dpn. I think we might've been long distance cursing twins! :) No FO for me today, so I'll just go bask in everyone else's glory. Happy weekend!

  3. Lovely hat! I bought metal dpns once and I couldn't get on with them. Every time I turned my work to go onto the next needle, whoosh! Out they fell. So I fell out of love with metal needles. I personally like either bamboo or hardwood needles as they seem to mature with age, like a good cheese! Do you have a good LYS where they might let you test needles before you buy?

  4. Halfpint, thank you!

CraftyCripple, I love the sleek wood needles so far, the Knit Picks Harmony being my favorite. These were just the cheap Clover bamboo because it was the only one I had in a 16" cable. I solved that issue recently and ordered some 16" from Knit Picks and just received them yesterday!

Paula, wow, that's brave! Using a crochet hook!? Were you able to get much work done with that?

Countess Ablaze, thank you! I have some metal dpns I bought awhile ago when I first started knitting and had a crazy cheap coupon to Michaels. They're for socks, so we'll see if I ever really use them since I ended up getting 12" circulars recently for socks. As I mentioned to CraftyCripple above, I actually love Knit Picks Harmony and just ordered some that arrived in the mail yesterday!

    Kathleen, thank you!

  6. The hat looks great! Be proud! When needles are giving you hassles, it definitely makes for some frustrating knitting, but the hat turned out wonderfully.

  12. Aimee, you should try it. You can't beat the price! I think I paid $6.50 for a hank. The colors are amazing and rich. As I mentioned, I found it a little splitty on cast on and the first row, but after that it was good. That could have just been the crappy needles too. It's really soft, but does get a little fuzzy.
